Chiron / About
About Alonso
I teach English and Spanish, and I am trained in philosophy and logic. The two belong together more than they seem: both are about saying exactly what you mean, and noticing when you have not.
Background
A short history
I studied analytic philosophy at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, then ancient philosophy at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. My doctoral research, at the University of Barcelona, is on Socratic ignorance and Hellenistic moral epistemology: roughly, what it means to know that you do not know, and how ancient philosophers thought we should act under uncertainty.

Teaching
How it shapes the lessons
Philosophy trains you to read slowly and argue carefully; logic trains you to see the structure under the words. In an English lesson that means I can tell you not only that a sentence is wrong but why, and give you something you can apply the next time.
It also means lessons are about real ideas. People speak and write better when they have something to say, so we choose subjects worth the effort.
Languages
English and Spanish are both native languages for me, so I teach both, and every lesson can be given in either. I work with Ancient Greek and Latin texts in my research. I hold a verified teaching certificate.

The name
Why Chiron
In Greek myth Chiron was the teacher of Achilles, Asclepius and Jason: the tutor who taught by example and practice rather than by lecture. It is the name of this site and of the workspace my students use between lessons.
Start with one lesson.
The first lesson is an assessment and a plan, so you know what the lessons would look like before you commit to more.
