Who it is for
School students who want mathematics to make sense, students preparing for mathematics at university, and adults returning to the subject or learning to read and write proofs.
What we work on
Four areas
Algebra and functions
Algebra, functions and graphs, exponentials and logarithms, and trigonometry, with the reasons behind the rules.
Logic and proof
Logic and quantifiers, sets and functions, and the main ways to prove something: directly, by contradiction, by contraposition and by induction.
Numbers and counting
Divisibility, primes and congruences; counting, the binomial theorem and elementary probability.
Towards university mathematics
Infinite sets and cardinality, complex numbers, and vectors and matrices.
How lessons run
We start with a diagnostic, so we neither repeat what you know nor skip what you do not. In lessons we work through problems and proofs together, then you try on your own while I check each step: a correct idea and a complete argument are not the same thing, and the lessons teach the difference.
Between lessons you work in the Mathematics course in Chiron: lessons, graded problems with hints and worked solutions, a proof workshop and spaced review. Your progress is saved to your record, so each lesson starts from what you actually did. Lessons are in English or Spanish.
